We want to talk. We want you to listen.
We want you to talk. We want to listen.
We believe that if we can engage in a REAL conversation, we can make a difference. And by we, we mean you.
We are here to energize, activate, and empower allies in the pursuit of our shared purpose, by engaging in an ongoing conversation focused on truth, understanding, and problem-solving. We’ll talk to whoever wants to engage, for as long as they’d like to continue.
At a moment in America defined by racial division and other historical challenges, the Church’s second-most senior leader challenged students at Brigham Young University and beyond to discover unity through Christ’s timeless love and in His gospel.
If circumstances allowed, President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency, would relish meeting face-to-face with every member of the “rising generation” of the Church to share his love and Apostolic counsel.
In July of 2020, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, an honest conversation about racism in America called A Long Talk About The Uncomfortable Truth was born. The first conversation included over 100 NCAA men’s basketball coaches. Among them were BYU assistants Bobby Horodyski and Cody Fueger. At the end of the call, the coaches were charged with continuing this conversation back on their campus. Bobby and Cody did just that, and when Whitney Johnson, the newly hired Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development, Diversity and Inclusion, heard about their experience, she led the way to bring that charge to BYU. In July of 2021, Whitney’s vision, coupled with the support of NACDA AD of the Year Tom Holmoe, created an opportunity for 45 members of the BYU Athletics department to experience A Long Talk for themselves. To give you an idea of how POWERFUL of an experience this was, we have shared some elements from the session below. First, take a look at the introductions from some of members of the BYU community who participated. You will also see some reflections that were shared as a result of their participation. Finally, if you haven’t seen it already, the department created a MUST WATCH video testimonial where they shared their takeaways from the experience with all of their student athletes.
