Osei Kweku
Atlanta, GA
Osei Kweku was born in Kitchener, Ontario, and spent his early years in his parents' native country of Ghana, West Africa, before eventually settling and being raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Raised with an attitude of service, Osei was greatly influenced by his parents, particularly his father, who founded a hospital in Ghana due to dissatisfaction with the local healthcare system. This act of commitment, responsibility, and sacrifice left an impression on Osei, teaching him that operating with purpose makes anything possible. For over 30 years, Osei's father has managed his medical practice in Cleveland while frequently traveling to Ghana to oversee the hospital.
Osei carries this spirit of giving and perseverance throughout his life. At Hampton University, discovering his love for broadcasting and media. After graduating, he began his mark in the radio industry, starting with an internship under the legendary Donnie Simpson from BET. Osei eventually landed his own in the Washington, D.C. area during the afternoon drive, working in other markets like Philadelphia, Baltimore, Atlanta, and St. Louis. In Washington, D.C., he gained recognition and became familiar to millions as the primary male voice-over talent for BET.
Osei's baritone voice became familiar, spanning markets such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, D.C., Atlanta, and St. Louis. Beyond radio, Osei has established himself as an international businessman and community leader. Inspired by his father's legacy, he helps others fulfill their mission to serve in developing countries, including his father's hospital. He uses his relationships with entertainers and athletes to encourage giving back, often encouraging them while on air.
In 2007, Osei sent his first group of youth from Atlanta's KIPP schools to Ghana, promoting cultural exchange and inspiring them to overcome daily obstacles by connecting with their ancestry. This was well before the Year of Return and the current engagement many in the West are having with Africa. He has been a strong advocate for building a bridge between Africans and African Americans in the diaspora and continues to work in that capacity in many ways.
As he began his media career, Osei has also been a strong advocate of Afrobeat music and breaking it stateside. In fact, he was the first person to break the music on terrestrial radio in America and introduced Wizkid to Akon, which opened the floodgates to what many are now experiencing today.
Most recently, Osei has served as Director of Business Development for Diamond Diaspora Media Group, the parent company of Atlanta Black Star, the largest African American digital news platform with over 15 million unique monthly visitors. He initiated their latest vertical, Black Star Week, which intersects South by Southwest, Davos, and Art Basel. The inaugural year was extremely successful, featuring partnerships with nonprofits serving the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Black Star Week celebrates culture, economics, financial literacy, music, film, food, and more. Osei continues to work with purpose-driven organizations to fulfill the mission of closing the gap for people in the diaspora globally.
